What to know before you buy
Topsoil, garden soil and fill dirt
Screened topsoil is the upper layer of soil, good for lawns and leveling. Garden soil or blended soil is topsoil mixed with compost, better for planting beds. Fill dirt is subsoil with little organic matter, used only to fill holes and raise grades under topsoil.
Getting the grade right
When leveling a yard, slope the soil away from the house at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet so rainwater drains away from the foundation.
